A right-handed player with a two-handed backhand, she reached a career-high WTA singles ranking of world No. 170 on 4 May 2015 and a career-high doubles ranking of No. 80 on 20 June 2016. Her career highlights include qualifying for the 2016 Wimbledon singles main draw, reaching a WTA doubles final at Katowice in 2016, seven ITF singles titles and sixteen ITF doubles titles.

Birth and Family

Melnikova was born in Perm, then part of the Soviet Union, on 5 February 1989.

Her father is Anatoliy, her mother Elena and her brother Sergey. Her father introduced her to tennis as a child.

Beginning Tennis

Official records differ slightly concerning the exact age at which Melnikova began playing: the ITF lists age five, while her WTA biography states that she started at seven.

Tennis nevertheless became her principal sport from childhood and eventually led to a professional career extending across approximately twenty years.

Move to Germany

After completing school in 2008, Melnikova moved from Russia to Germany.

Germany became an important training and competitive base during much of her professional career. She has trained in the Ruhr area and also competed in German club tennis.

Languages and Interests

Melnikova speaks Russian, English and German.

Her WTA biography lists driving cars, shopping and sleeping among her interests away from tennis. Martina Hingis was her childhood tennis idol.

Professional Beginnings

Melnikova began playing professionally in the mid-2000s, with her first ITF results appearing during 2006–2007.

Her progression was gradual: rather than emerging rapidly through the junior ranks, she accumulated experience over many seasons at lower-level ITF tournaments.

First ITF Doubles Title – 2007

Melnikova won her first professional doubles title at an ITF $10,000 tournament in 2007.

Doubles would eventually become the discipline in which she achieved her highest ranking and her only WTA Tour final.

First ITF Singles Title – 2008

Melnikova won her first ITF singles championship in September 2008 at a $10,000 indoor hard-court tournament.

That same period also brought additional doubles success as she gradually established herself on the professional circuit.

First WTA Main Draw – Doubles

Melnikova's first appearance in a WTA main draw came in doubles at Barcelona in 2008.

At this stage her singles ranking remained well outside the world's leading players, and most of her schedule continued to consist of ITF events.

Steady ITF Development

Between 2008 and 2013 Melnikova built her ranking incrementally, particularly through strong results in European tournaments.

Her singles year-end ranking improved from No. 886 in 2009 to No. 373 in 2012 and No. 283 in 2013.

2014 Breakthrough

The 2014 season marked a significant improvement in Melnikova's singles career.

She reached a season-high ranking of world No. 180 and finished the year at No. 203.

ITF $25,000 Champion – 2014

Melnikova won her second career ITF singles title in November 2014 at $25,000 level.

The result provided important ranking points and helped position her for her career-best season in 2015.

Career-Best Singles Ranking – 2015

Melnikova reached her career-high WTA singles ranking of world No. 170 on 4 May 2015.

She finished the season at No. 189, the strongest year-end singles ranking of her career.

WTA Singles Breakthrough – 2015

Melnikova enjoyed her strongest WTA-level singles results during 2015.

Her best result at a tournament now classified at WTA 500 level was a round-of-16 appearance, while she also reached a WTA 125 quarterfinal.

Grand Slam Qualifying Debut

Melnikova entered Australian Open qualifying in 2015, beginning a series of attempts to reach Grand Slam main draws.

She was eliminated in the first qualifying round but would return to major qualifying competition repeatedly over the following years.

Taipei WTA 125 Doubles Final – 2015

Melnikova reached the doubles final of the Taipei WTA 125 tournament in November 2015 alongside Elise Mertens.

They finished runner-up to Kanae Hisami and Kotomi Takahata.

Major Doubles Progress – 2015

Melnikova's doubles ranking improved markedly during 2015.

She finished the year at world No. 150 after winning two significant ITF $50,000 doubles titles.

Career-Best Doubles Season – 2016

The 2016 season was the strongest of Melnikova's doubles career and also included her only Grand Slam singles main-draw appearance.

She reached her first WTA Tour final and climbed into the doubles Top 100.

Katowice WTA Doubles Final – 2016

Melnikova partnered Valentyna Ivakhnenko at the Katowice Open in April 2016.

The pair advanced to the championship match, Melnikova's only WTA Tour final.

Katowice Final

Melnikova and Ivakhnenko faced Japanese pair Eri Hozumi and Miyu Kato in the final.

They narrowly lost 3–6, 7–5, [10–8] in a deciding match tiebreak.

Other WTA Doubles Results – 2016

Melnikova also reached doubles quarterfinals in Kuala Lumpur and Kaohsiung during 2016.

These results helped establish her temporarily among the world's Top 100 doubles players.

Career-High Doubles Ranking

Melnikova reached world No. 80 in doubles on 20 June 2016.

This remains the highest ranking she achieved in either discipline.

Wimbledon 2016

The defining singles achievement of Melnikova's career came at Wimbledon in 2016, where she reached the main draw for the first and only time at a Grand Slam.

She was eliminated in the first round but had finally reached the main stage of one of tennis's four major championships after years on the ITF circuit.

Wimbledon Doubles Qualifying – 2016

Melnikova also competed in women's doubles qualifying at Wimbledon in 2016.

She did not reach the doubles main draw.

Largest Early Singles Title – 2016

Melnikova won an ITF $50,000 singles tournament in June 2016 on grass.

It was one of the largest singles championships of her career and came during the period immediately surrounding her Wimbledon breakthrough.

2016 Year-End Rankings

Melnikova finished 2016 ranked world No. 230 in singles and approximately No. 110 in doubles.

The doubles ranking reflected the most successful full-tour season of her career.

2017 Season

Melnikova's rankings declined during 2017, particularly in doubles.

She nevertheless won another ITF singles championship, this time on clay, demonstrating her ability to succeed on surfaces beyond hard courts.

2018 Season

Melnikova won another ITF $25,000 singles title in December 2018.

She finished the season ranked world No. 325 after reaching a season high of No. 257.

2019 Resurgence

Melnikova improved substantially again in 2019.

She reached a season-high singles ranking of No. 189 and finished the year around No. 200.

ITF Singles Champion – 2019

Melnikova captured a W25 hard-court singles title in October 2019.

The championship was her sixth ITF singles title.

Doubles Revival – 2019

She also won three ITF doubles championships during 2019, on both clay and indoor hard courts.

This demonstrated that her doubles career remained productive despite having fallen far below the Top-100 ranking achieved in 2016.

2020 Season

Despite the pandemic-shortened calendar, Melnikova remained near the Top 200 in singles throughout 2020.

She reached a season-high ranking of world No. 189 and finished at No. 196.

WTA 125 Quarterfinal – 2020

Melnikova reached a WTA 125 singles quarterfinal during 2020, matching her best career result at that level.

It represented a notable result for a player who was already 31 years old and had spent most of her career on the ITF circuit.

Australian Open Qualifying

Melnikova competed in Australian Open qualifying in 2015, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

She never advanced beyond the opening qualifying round in Melbourne.

2021 Season

Melnikova remained competitive around the Top 200 during 2021, reaching a season-high ranking of No. 182 and finishing at No. 216.

Her longevity was increasingly notable, as she was still competing regularly at WTA and Grand Slam qualifying level in her early thirties.

Lausanne 2021

At the Lausanne WTA tournament, Melnikova qualified for the singles main draw and pushed top seed Tamara Zidanšek before losing in three sets.

The tournament provided one of her more visible late-career WTA appearances.

Lausanne Doubles Quarterfinal

Melnikova also reached the Lausanne doubles quarterfinals in 2021 alongside Alena Fomina-Klotz.

The result was her strongest WTA doubles performance for several years.

US Open Qualifying – 2021

Melnikova reached the second round of US Open qualifying in 2021.

It remained one of her best qualifying performances at a Grand Slam outside Wimbledon.

Seventh ITF Singles Title – 2022

Melnikova won her seventh and most recent ITF singles title in March 2022.

The W25 championship was played on clay and showed that she remained capable of winning professional tournaments at age 33.

Roland Garros Qualifying – 2022

Melnikova achieved her best Roland Garros qualifying result in 2022.

She reached the second qualifying round before being eliminated.

2022 Ranking

Melnikova reached a season-high ranking of world No. 177 in 2022, her strongest position since 2015.

She finished the season at No. 246.

Late-Career Return Near Top 200

Reaching No. 177 at age 33 was an impressive late-career achievement.

It meant that seven years after reaching her career high of No. 170, Melnikova had returned to within only seven ranking positions of that mark.

US Open Qualifying – 2023

Melnikova reached the second qualifying round at the US Open again in 2023.

She was eventually defeated during a qualifying event that included several established former WTA players.

2023 Ranking Decline

Although Melnikova still produced isolated strong results, her ranking declined significantly during 2023.

She finished the season at world No. 524.

San Diego 2024

Melnikova produced one of the most surprising results of her late career at the 2024 San Diego WTA 500 tournament.

Ranked far outside the Top 400, she came through qualifying to reach the main draw.

San Diego Qualifying – 2024

Her qualification at age 35 demonstrated the durability that characterized the latter part of her career.

She was one of several qualifiers to enter a strong WTA 500 field containing numerous Top-50 players.

San Diego Main Draw – 2024

Melnikova faced Canadian teenager Marina Stakusic in the first round.

Stakusic won a competitive three-set match, but reaching a WTA 500 main draw at age 35 was itself a significant achievement.

Sixteenth ITF Doubles Title – 2024

Melnikova won her sixteenth ITF doubles championship in February 2024 at W50 level.

It was her first ITF doubles title since 2021 and came approximately seventeen years after her first professional doubles championship.

2024 Year-End Ranking

Melnikova finished 2024 ranked world No. 422 in singles and No. 506 in doubles.

Despite the decline from her peak years, she remained active well beyond the age at which many players from her generation had retired.

2025 Season

Melnikova's ranking declined sharply during 2025.

She began the year around world No. 439, fell outside the Top 600 by June and was ranked in the 800s by August.

2026 Status

As of September 2026 Melnikova has no current WTA singles or doubles ranking.

The WTA lists her as inactive. Although she has not made a formal high-profile retirement announcement, her greatly reduced activity and absence from the rankings indicate that her full-time professional career has effectively reached its concluding stage.

Career-High Singles Ranking

Melnikova's career-high singles ranking was world No. 170, achieved on 4 May 2015.

She spent substantial portions of her career between approximately No. 180 and No. 350 rather than becoming a regular Top-100 player.

Career-High Doubles Ranking

Her career-high doubles ranking was world No. 80 on 20 June 2016.

Doubles therefore provided her only entry into the WTA Top 100.

ITF Singles Titles

Melnikova won seven ITF singles championships during her career:

2008 – 1 title
2014 – 1 title
2016 – 1 title
2017 – 1 title
2018 – 1 title
2019 – 1 title
2022 – 1 title

ITF Singles Finals

Melnikova reached eighteen ITF singles finals, winning seven titles and finishing runner-up eleven times.

Her championship appearances spanned more than thirteen years.

ITF Doubles Titles

Melnikova won sixteen ITF doubles titles between 2007 and 2024.

The titles came on clay, outdoor and indoor hard courts and carpet, reflecting considerable surface versatility.

Largest ITF Achievements

Her strongest ITF results included singles and doubles championships at the former $50,000 level, together with a W50 doubles title late in her career.

These tournaments represented the level immediately below regular WTA competition for much of her career.

WTA Singles Record

Melnikova never won a WTA singles title or reached a WTA singles final.

Her best tour-level singles results included a round-of-16 appearance at a tournament now classified as WTA 500 and several main-draw appearances at WTA 250 level.

WTA 125 Singles

Melnikova reached two WTA 125 singles quarterfinals, in 2015 and 2020.

Those results represent her deepest runs at tournaments positioned between regular WTA and ITF competition.

WTA Doubles Final

Melnikova reached one WTA Tour doubles final:

Katowice 2016 – with Valentyna Ivakhnenko; runner-up to Eri Hozumi and Miyu Kato.

WTA 125 Doubles Final

She also reached the Taipei WTA 125 doubles final in 2015 with Elise Mertens.

The two finals occurred during the period when Melnikova was approaching her career-high doubles ranking.

Grand Slam Singles Record

Melnikova's only Grand Slam singles main-draw appearance came at Wimbledon in 2016.

Her career Grand Slam main-draw record is therefore 0–1.

Australian Open

Melnikova competed in Australian Open qualifying in 2015, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Her best result was the first qualifying round.

Roland Garros

Melnikova's best Roland Garros result was the second qualifying round in 2022.

She never reached the Paris main draw.

Wimbledon

Wimbledon was the only Grand Slam where Melnikova reached the singles main draw.

Her best result was the first round in 2016.

US Open

Melnikova reached the second qualifying round at the US Open in both 2021 and 2023.

She never qualified for the New York main draw.

Playing Style

Melnikova is a right-handed player with a two-handed backhand.

Her game is based more on placement, variation and experience than on overwhelming power.

Preferred Surfaces

The ITF lists hard court as Melnikova's preferred surface, while her WTA biography names both hard and clay.

Her career results support this versatility: she won professional titles on hard court, clay, grass and indoor surfaces.

Drop Shot

Melnikova has identified the drop shot as her favorite stroke.

This reflects an element of variety in a game developed during many years of competing across different surfaces and conditions.

Grass-Court Success

Grass occupies a special place in Melnikova's career despite being only a small portion of the professional calendar.

She won an ITF $50,000 singles title on grass in 2016 and subsequently made her only Grand Slam main-draw appearance at Wimbledon.

Doubles Strengths

Melnikova's greater ranking success in doubles suggests strong positioning, anticipation and comfort around the net.

Her sixteen ITF titles and WTA final demonstrate that doubles was more than a secondary activity during her peak years.

Longevity

Longevity is one of the defining characteristics of Melnikova's career.

Her first ITF doubles title came in 2007, while her most recent came in 2024 – a span of seventeen years.

Late-Career Competitiveness

Melnikova was still capable of reaching world No. 177 in singles at age 33 and qualifying for a WTA 500 main draw at age 35.

These achievements are notable given that she had never possessed the ranking security available to long-term Top-100 players.

Life on the ITF Circuit

Most of Melnikova's professional career took place below the highest-profile WTA level.

She therefore represents the large group of international professionals whose careers require extensive travel through ITF tournaments while constantly competing for ranking points and opportunities to enter larger events.

Career Prize Money

Melnikova earned approximately US$694,000 in official career prize money.

The total reflects a lengthy professional career despite relatively few appearances in the most lucrative Grand Slam and major WTA main draws.

Career Highlights

Full name: Marina Anatolyevna Melnikova
Born: 5 February 1989, characterized by gradual progress rather than a sudden breakthrough. After entering professional tennis in the mid-2000s, she spent many seasons on the ITF circuit before moving close to the Top 200 in 2014 and reaching her career-high singles ranking of No. 170 in 2015.

The peak came in 2015–2016. She reached a WTA 125 doubles final with Elise Mertens, a WTA Tour doubles final at Katowice with Valentyna Ivakhnenko, climbed to No. 80 in doubles and made her only Grand Slam singles main draw at Wimbledon.

Her rankings declined afterward, but Melnikova repeatedly rebuilt. She won singles titles in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022 and returned to world No. 177 at age 33, almost matching the career high she had achieved seven years earlier.

The final phase of her career remained surprisingly competitive. She reached US Open qualifying in 2023, qualified for the San Diego WTA 500 event and won another ITF doubles title in 2024. Her ranking then declined rapidly during 2025, and by 2026 she was no longer ranked.

Assessment

Marina Melnikova was never a regular WTA Top-100 singles player, but her career demonstrates unusual persistence and professional longevity. A singles high of No. 170, doubles high of No. 80, Wimbledon main-draw appearance and WTA doubles final represent meaningful achievements after many years spent primarily on the ITF circuit.

Doubles provided the highest-ranking phase of her career, culminating in the 2016 Katowice final and a place inside the world's Top 100. In singles, Wimbledon 2016 remains the defining milestone, while her seven ITF titles show sustained success below WTA level.

Perhaps the most distinctive feature of Melnikova's record is its duration. She won professional titles from 2007 through 2024 and remained capable of qualifying for a WTA 500 tournament at age 35. Her career therefore illustrates the demanding but durable path of a player who spent nearly two decades competing internationally without the security of an established Top-100 ranking.

all texts by ChatGPT

instinct overtaking deliberation.
