A 1.61 m right-hander with a two-handed backhand, she built an exceptionally extensive career primarily on clay and on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour. Jani reached a career-high WTA singles ranking of world No. 104 on 19 September 2022 and No. 124 in doubles on 22 August 2016. She won 25 ITF singles and 34 ITF doubles titles, reached a WTA 125 singles final and doubles final in Bucharest in 2022, made two Grand Slam singles main draws, represented Hungary for many years in the Fed Cup/Billie Jean King Cup and competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Background and Development

Jani grew up in Siófok, a town on Lake Balaton, and began playing tennis at the age of six. Her family includes parents János, Szilvia and Zsolt, brothers Máté and Bálint and sister Petra. She speaks Hungarian and English.

She began competing professionally on the ITF Circuit in Europe in 2008. Clay quickly became her preferred and most productive surface, and the majority of her hundreds of professional matches were played on it.

Playing Profile

Jani is 1.61 m tall and played right-handed with a two-handed backhand. Without the natural serve power of taller players, her tennis was built around movement, consistency, depth and constructing points from the baseline.

Clay suited those qualities particularly well. She was comfortable in long exchanges, defended efficiently and possessed the patience required to turn rallies gradually in her favour. Her durability was equally important: few players of her ranking level accumulated as many professional matches over such a long period.

Early Professional Career

Jani made her WTA qualifying debut at Budapest in 2009. During 2010 she climbed toward the Top 250 while simultaneously becoming an increasingly successful ITF player.

Her first major ranking breakthrough came in 2011. She compiled a 58–18 season record, won five ITF singles tournaments and finished the year at No. 162, establishing herself as one of Hungary's leading professional players.

First Grand Slam – US Open 2011

At the 2011 US Open Jani successfully came through qualifying to reach her first Grand Slam singles main draw. She faced American Sloane Stephens in the opening round and was defeated.

The same season she made her WTA Tour main-draw debut at her home tournament in Budapest, losing in the first round to Lesia Tsurenko.

First Ranking Peak – 2012

Jani continued progressing during the first half of 2012 and reached a then career-high singles ranking of No. 147 on 7 May. She also reached the second qualifying round of the Australian Open.

Her ranking subsequently declined, and for almost a decade she remained principally an ITF-level player, generally moving between approximately No. 180 and No. 350 rather than progressing directly toward the Top 100.

First WTA Main-Draw Victory – Istanbul 2016

Jani recorded her first WTA Tour main-draw singles victory at Istanbul in 2016. She defeated Ayla Aksu before losing to Nao Hibino in the second round.

The result came approximately eight years after she had begun competing professionally and illustrates the gradual nature of her career development.

WTA Doubles Final – Florianópolis 2016

Jani's best regular WTA doubles result also came in 2016. Partnering fellow Hungarian Tímea Babos, she reached the doubles final at Florianópolis.

The season was her strongest in the doubles rankings. On 22 August 2016 she reached a career-high world ranking of No. 124.

Rio Olympic Games – 2016

Jani represented Hungary at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in women's doubles alongside Tímea Babos. The Hungarian pair received a place in the Olympic field but were eliminated in the first round.

The Olympic appearance became one of the major representative achievements of a career in which national-team tennis was consistently important.

Strasbourg 2018

At Strasbourg in 2018 Jani recorded another significant WTA victory, defeating world No. 76 Sachia Vickery before losing to former world No. 4 and Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulková in the second round.

Her ranking nevertheless remained outside the Top 200 for much of this phase of her career, and she continued accumulating most of her victories through the extensive European ITF clay-court calendar.

Belgrade Breakthrough – 2021

At age 29 Jani unexpectedly produced her best regular WTA singles tournament at the 2021 Serbia Ladies Open in Belgrade. Ranked around No. 220, she qualified by defeating Aleksandra Krunić and Jaqueline Cristian.

In the main draw she beat Tereza Martincová and Anna Kalinskaya in three sets to reach her first WTA quarterfinal. Viktoriya Tomova eventually defeated her 7–5 in the deciding set. The run was especially notable because Jani had not won a WTA main-draw match since Strasbourg three years earlier.

Late-Career Peak – 2022

Remarkably, Jani's strongest season came at age 31, more than a decade after her first Grand Slam appearance. During the summer and early autumn of 2022 she produced a sustained run of success that carried her close to the world's Top 100.

She won the biggest ITF title of her career at a W60 tournament in Prague, reached the semifinal of the Bari WTA 125 and then advanced to the final of the Bucharest WTA 125. During this period she recorded several victories over Top-100 opponents.

Roland Garros 2022

Jani returned to a Grand Slam singles main draw at Roland Garros in 2022, eleven years after her previous major appearance at the 2011 US Open. She entered the draw as a lucky loser.

She lost in the first round, but the appearance was significant both because of the eleven-year gap and because Roland Garros was the major most naturally suited to her clay-court game.

Bucharest WTA 125 Final – 2022

The outstanding tournament of Jani's career came at the Țiriac Foundation Trophy in Bucharest in September 2022. She defeated, among others, Panna Udvardy in an extraordinary quarterfinal after trailing 6–0, 3–0, eventually winning 0–6, 6–4, 7–5.

She then defeated Maryna Zanevska 7–5, 7–6 in the semifinal. In her first WTA 125 singles final she faced Irina-Camelia Begu and lost 6–3, 6–3.

Career-High Ranking

The Bucharest run completed the strongest stretch of Jani's career and lifted her to a career-high WTA singles ranking of No. 104 on 19 September 2022.

She finished the season at No. 111, by far the best year-end ranking of her career. Her previous best year-end position had been No. 162 eleven years earlier in 2011.

Bucharest Doubles Final – 2022

Jani nearly completed an exceptional double in Bucharest. Partnering fellow Hungarian Panna Udvardy, she also reached the WTA 125 doubles final.

They were defeated 7–5, 6–3 by Aliona Bolsova and Andrea Gámiz. Jani therefore finished the same tournament as runner-up in both singles and doubles.

2023 Season

Jani began 2023 close to the Top 100 and reached a season-high ranking of No. 111. She continued playing WTA 125 and WTA Tour events, including Bogotá, Bari, Iași, Lausanne and Båstad.

At Bari she recorded one of her more notable victories of the season by defeating former world No. 11 Alizé Cornet. However, she was unable to defend the large number of ranking points accumulated during her exceptional 2022 run and finished 2023 around No. 319.

Final Season and Retirement – 2024

Jani continued competing during the first half of 2024, primarily at ITF level. Her final months included tournaments in Austria and Slovenia and WTA qualifying appearances in Makarska and Prague.

In July 2024, at age 32, she publicly announced the end of her professional career. She had struggled with injury for an extended period before deciding to retire. Her farewell message described tennis as a demanding but beautiful journey and thanked those who had supported her throughout it.

ITF Success

Jani was one of the most prolific ITF players of her generation. Over her career she won 25 ITF singles titles and 34 ITF doubles titles, for a combined total of 59 championships.

Her singles record exceeded 500 professional victories. The 2022 Prague W60 was the biggest ITF singles championship of her career and came during the late surge that ultimately carried her to No. 104.

Grand Slam Record

Australian Open – Qualifying second round (2012)
Roland Garros – First round (2022)
Wimbledon – Qualifying second round (2022, 2023)
US Open – First round (2011)
Grand Slam singles main draws – 2
Grand Slam main-draw singles record – 0–2

Jani's two Grand Slam main-draw appearances were separated by eleven years, an unusual statistic that illustrates the persistence and late improvement that defined her career.

Billie Jean King Cup

Jani made her debut for Hungary in the Fed Cup in 2010 at age 18 and remained involved with the national team across much of the following fourteen years as the competition became the Billie Jean King Cup.

She represented Hungary in both singles and doubles and accumulated more than twenty victories in national-team competition. Depending on the statistical cut-off used, records list approximately 40–50 ties/matches across her long period of service. Her longevity made her one of the experienced figures of Hungarian women's team tennis.

German Bundesliga Tennis

Jani also had experience in German club tennis. She represented TC Rüppurr Karlsruhe in the Tennis Bundesliga and continued with the club in the 2. Bundesliga following relegation.

This was consistent with a career built largely around central European tennis, combining the international ITF circuit with national league competition.

Career Rankings

Career-high singles ranking – No. 104 (19 September 2022)
Career-high doubles ranking – No. 124 (22 August 2016)
2011 year-end singles ranking – No. 162
2012 season high – No. 147
2016 season high – No. 220
2019 season high – No. 189
2020 year-end ranking – No. 207
2021 year-end ranking – No. 168
2022 year-end ranking – No. 111
2023 year-end ranking – No. 319
Retired – July 2024

Career Statistics

Full name – Réka Luca Jani
Born – 31 July 1991, Siófok, Hungary
Nationality – Hungarian
Residence during career – Sopron, Hungary
Height – 1.61 m (5 ft 3 in)
Plays – Right-handed, two-handed backhand
Started tennis – Age 6
Professional career – 2008–2024
Preferred surface – Clay
Career-high singles ranking – No. 104
Career-high doubles ranking – No. 124
Career singles record – approximately 548–362
ITF singles titles – 25
ITF doubles titles – 34
WTA singles titles – 0
Best regular WTA singles result – Quarterfinal, Belgrade 2021
Best WTA 125 singles result – Final, Bucharest 2022
Best WTA doubles result – Final, Florianópolis 2016
Olympic appearance – Rio 2016 doubles
Career prize money – approximately US$864,000

Playing Style

Jani was fundamentally a clay-court baseliner. Her 1.61 m stature meant that serve power was never the central weapon in her game. Instead she relied on mobility, consistency, disciplined shot selection and the ability to tolerate long physical exchanges.

She was particularly effective when given time to construct rallies, move opponents laterally and exploit errors rather than attempting to end points immediately. Her large volume of ITF clay-court success reflected both this playing style and her exceptional familiarity with the surface.

Career Assessment

Jani's career was defined less by spectacular early success than by persistence. She became a professional in 2008, reached her first Grand Slam main draw in 2011 and spent most of the following decade outside the Top 150 while accumulating a remarkable number of victories and titles on the ITF circuit.

Her late breakthrough gives the career its distinctive shape. At 31 she won a W60 title, reached a WTA 125 semifinal and final in consecutive weeks, returned to a Grand Slam main draw after eleven years and climbed to No. 104 – the highest ranking of her career. She came within only four ranking positions of entering the Top 100.

By her retirement in July 2024, Jani had accumulated 59 ITF singles and doubles titles, more than 500 singles victories, two Grand Slam main-draw appearances, a WTA 125 final, an Olympic appearance and more than a decade of service to Hungary in the Fed Cup/Billie Jean King Cup. Her record makes her a notable example of a long-serving European circuit professional whose best tennis arrived unusually late in her career.

all texts by ChatGPT

pulled forward by momentum.
