A 1.60 m right-hander with a two-handed backhand, she reached a career-high WTA singles ranking of No. 51 on 25 November 2024 and a doubles ranking of No. 72 on 15 September 2025. She has won three WTA 125 singles titles, one WTA 125 doubles title and numerous ITF championships. Her principal achievements include a WTA semifinal in Acapulco in 2020, a historic victory over Madison Keys at the 2025 US Open, an Australian Open doubles quarterfinal in 2025 and representing Mexico at the Tokyo Olympic Games. She remains active on the WTA Tour in 2026.

Personal Background

Zarazúa was born in Mexico City to José Luis Zarazúa and Alejandra Ruckstuhl. Her older brother Patricio, a former college tennis player at Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida, introduced her to tennis and later became her coach.

Before concentrating on tennis, she also practised gymnastics and diving. She eventually chose tennis partly because her brother was already involved in the sport.

Her great-uncle Vicente Zarazúa represented Mexico in Davis Cup competition and won medals at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic tennis exhibition. The family therefore has a substantial history in Mexican tennis.

Playing Profile

Zarazúa is 1.60 m tall and plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand. Her game is based on excellent court coverage, anticipation, consistency and the ability to redirect the ball from defensive positions.

Unlike many taller WTA players, she does not rely on an exceptionally powerful serve. Instead, she constructs points through movement, controlled aggression, variation and persistence in baseline exchanges.

Her relatively small stature makes her achievements particularly notable in an era dominated by increasingly powerful serving and aggressive first-strike tennis.

Early Tennis Development

Zarazúa began playing tennis as a child and gradually developed through junior and international competition. She made her first appearances on the professional ITF circuit as a teenager.

Her early career involved extensive travel between tournaments in Mexico, the United States and other countries in the Americas. She later established herself as a regular competitor on the international ITF Women's Circuit.

Her development was gradual rather than spectacular. She spent several seasons outside the world's Top 200 before achieving a significant breakthrough.

Early Professional Career – 2013 to 2016

Zarazúa entered the WTA rankings during her teenage years and began accumulating results at lower-level ITF tournaments.

Her year-end singles ranking improved from No. 862 in 2013 to No. 505 in 2015 and No. 291 in 2016.

During this period she gained experience against international opposition and developed the consistency that would become one of the strongest characteristics of her professional game.

Progress on the ITF Circuit – 2017 and 2018

Zarazúa continued improving during 2017 and reached a season-high singles ranking of No. 240. She finished the year at No. 248.

In 2018 she climbed further, reaching No. 186. She also made progress in doubles, achieving a season-high ranking of No. 135.

Although she had not yet established herself as a regular WTA main-draw player, her results indicated that she was approaching the level required to compete in Grand Slam qualifying.

WTA Tour Development – 2019

Zarazúa spent much of 2019 competing on the ITF circuit and in WTA qualifying events.

Her singles ranking fluctuated, and she finished the year at No. 280. Nevertheless, she continued developing her game and gaining experience against higher-ranked opponents.

Her persistence during this period became particularly important when she achieved her first major WTA breakthrough the following season.

Acapulco 2020 – Historic WTA Semifinal

Zarazúa produced the first major breakthrough of her professional career at the 2020 Mexican Open in Acapulco.

Competing as a wildcard and ranked approximately No. 270, she defeated former US Open champion Sloane Stephens in the first round. She followed with victories over Katie Volynets and Tamara Zidanšek.

Her 6–2, 3–6, 6–2 quarterfinal victory over Zidanšek carried her into her first WTA Tour singles semifinal.

She became the first Mexican woman to reach a WTA semifinal since Angélica Gavaldón in 1993. Her run ended against Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez, but the tournament established Zarazúa as a leading figure in Mexican women's tennis.

Roland Garros Breakthrough – 2020

Later in 2020, Zarazúa qualified for the singles main draw at Roland Garros, becoming the first Mexican woman to compete in a Grand Slam singles main draw in approximately twenty years.

She defeated French wildcard Elsa Jacquemot in the opening round before losing to third seed Elina Svitolina in the second round.

Her appearance attracted considerable attention in Mexico because the country had experienced a lengthy absence from women's Grand Slam singles competition.

She finished the season at No. 142, her highest year-end ranking to that point.

Concord WTA 125 Final – 2021

Zarazúa continued progressing during 2021 and reached her first WTA 125 singles final at Concord, Massachusetts.

She finished runner-up to Poland's Magdalena Fręch, gaining valuable ranking points and experience at a higher tournament level.

Her season-high singles ranking was No. 117, and she finished the year at No. 127.

The Concord result confirmed that her Acapulco semifinal and Roland Garros breakthrough were not isolated achievements.

Tokyo Olympic Games

Zarazúa represented Mexico at the Tokyo Olympic Games, held in 2021.

She competed in women's singles and doubles, participating in one of the most prestigious international sporting events of her career.

Although she did not advance beyond the opening round, her Olympic participation was an important milestone and reflected her position among Mexico's leading professional tennis players.

Ranking Setback – 2022

Zarazúa experienced a difficult period during 2022. Her singles ranking fell substantially, and she finished the season at No. 350.

She continued competing at ITF tournaments while attempting to rebuild her position on the international tour.

Her subsequent recovery would become one of the most impressive features of her career, eventually carrying her to a ranking more than 100 places higher than her previous personal best.

Montevideo WTA 125 Champion – 2023

The turning point in Zarazúa's comeback came at the Montevideo Open in Uruguay in December 2023.

She captured her first WTA 125 singles championship, an important step beyond her previous ITF successes.

The title helped her finish 2023 at No. 165, after having reached a season-high ranking of No. 104.

Her Montevideo victory marked the beginning of a sustained rise toward the world's Top 100.

Historic Top-100 Breakthrough – 2024

In January 2024 Zarazúa entered the WTA singles Top 100 for the first time, becoming only the second Mexican woman to achieve the milestone in the modern WTA rankings era, following Angélica Gavaldón.

Her progress represented an important moment for Mexican women's tennis, which had not produced a regular Top-100 singles player for many years.

She continued improving throughout the season and eventually reached a career-high ranking of No. 51 on 25 November 2024.

Charleston WTA 125 Championships – 2024

Zarazúa won two WTA 125 singles championships in Charleston, South Carolina, during 2024.

The two events were played on different surfaces, one on hard courts and the other on clay, demonstrating her versatility.

These titles, combined with her Montevideo championship in 2023, gave her three WTA 125 singles titles by the end of 2024.

Her Charleston victories were central to her rise into the world's Top 60.

ITF Titles in 2024

In addition to her WTA 125 achievements, Zarazúa won ITF singles titles at Templeton, California, and Tyler, Texas, during 2024.

These W75 and W100 championships provided further ranking points and demonstrated her ability to win consistently at different tournament levels.

Winning four significant singles titles across the WTA 125 and ITF circuits made 2024 the most successful championship season of her career.

US Open Breakthrough – 2024

Zarazúa made her US Open singles main-draw debut in 2024.

She defeated No. 28 seed Caroline Garcia in the first round, recording an important victory over an established former Top-10 player.

She subsequently lost in the second round, but the result was another major step in her development and confirmed that she could compete effectively at Grand Slam level.

Career-High Ranking – November 2024

On 25 November 2024 Zarazúa reached world No. 51, the highest singles ranking of her career.

She finished the year at No. 60, her first Top-100 year-end ranking.

The achievement was especially significant because she had finished 2022 outside the Top 300 and had spent much of her earlier career on the ITF circuit.

Australian Open 2025 – Singles

Zarazúa reached the second round of the Australian Open singles tournament in January 2025.

She defeated American Taylor Townsend in the opening round before losing to Italy's Jasmine Paolini.

The result gave her a second-round appearance at a third different Grand Slam tournament, following Roland Garros and the US Open.

Australian Open 2025 – Doubles Quarterfinal

One of Zarazúa's strongest doubles achievements came at the 2025 Australian Open, where she reached the women's doubles quarterfinals.

The result was her first Grand Slam quarterfinal in either discipline and demonstrated her growing effectiveness as a doubles player.

Her successful doubles performances contributed to a significant rise in her WTA doubles ranking during 2025.

Wimbledon Breakthrough – 2025

In 2025 Zarazúa recorded her first Wimbledon singles main-draw victory and advanced to the second round.

The result completed an important personal milestone: she had now won at least one singles main-draw match at all four Grand Slam tournaments.

Her ability to win on grass was particularly noteworthy given her preference for extended baseline rallies and the relatively small number of grass-court tournaments in her regular schedule.

US Open 2025 – Victory over Madison Keys

The most celebrated victory of Zarazúa's career came at the 2025 US Open.

In the first round on Arthur Ashe Stadium, she defeated world No. 6 and reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys, recording her first career victory over a Top-10 opponent.

The victory was also historic for Mexico: Zarazúa became the first Mexican woman to defeat a Top-10 player at the US Open.

It was her second consecutive first-round upset of a seeded opponent in New York, following her 2024 victory over Caroline Garcia.

Although she lost in the second round, the Keys victory attracted international attention and became the defining individual match of her professional career.

São Paulo Semifinal – 2025

Zarazúa reached the semifinals of the São Paulo Open in September 2025.

It was her second regular WTA Tour singles semifinal, more than five years after her breakthrough in Acapulco in 2020.

The result demonstrated that she remained competitive at tour level and was capable of producing deep tournament runs outside the ITF and WTA 125 circuits.

Austin WTA 125 Title – 2025

Zarazúa added another WTA 125 singles championship at Austin, Texas, during 2025.

It was her third WTA 125 singles title in the official WTA championship records, alongside Montevideo in 2023 and Charleston in 2024.

She finished 2025 ranked No. 70 in singles, maintaining her position among the world's Top 100 for a second consecutive year.

Doubles Career

Zarazúa has also enjoyed substantial success in doubles. She won the Puerto Vallarta WTA 125 doubles championship in 2024 alongside Belarusian player Iryna Shymanovich.

She reached further WTA 125 doubles finals in Valencia and Bari during 2024, partnering Italy's Angelica Moratelli.

Her doubles ranking climbed rapidly during 2025, reaching a career high of No. 72 on 15 September.

She has also won numerous ITF doubles championships, making doubles an important part of her professional career rather than merely an occasional secondary activity.

Grand Slam Singles Record

Australian Open – Second round (2025)
Roland Garros – Second round (2020)
Wimbledon – Second round (2025)
US Open – Second round (2024, 2025)
Best Grand Slam singles result – Second round
Grand Slam singles main-draw victories – 5
Grand Slam singles main-draw defeats – 13

Although Zarazúa has not yet advanced to the third round of a Grand Slam singles tournament, her record includes significant victories over Caroline Garcia and Madison Keys at the US Open.

Grand Slam Doubles Record

Australian Open – Quarterfinal (2025)
Roland Garros – Second round (2025)
Wimbledon – First round (2025, 2026)
US Open – Second round (2025)
Best Grand Slam doubles result – Australian Open quarterfinal (2025)

Her Australian Open quarterfinal remains her strongest Grand Slam result in either singles or doubles.

Billie Jean King Cup – Mexico

Zarazúa has represented Mexico in Billie Jean King Cup competition, formerly known as the Fed Cup.

She has been one of Mexico's leading singles players in the competition and has also contributed in doubles.

By 2025 her recorded Billie Jean King Cup match record stood at approximately 17 victories and 13 defeats.

Her national-team appearances have been important for a country seeking to rebuild its presence in international women's tennis.

Playing Style and Competitive Strengths

Zarazúa's game is based on speed, anticipation and consistency rather than overwhelming power.

At 1.60 m, she is among the shorter players competing regularly at WTA level. She compensates through efficient movement, an ability to extend rallies and accurate placement from the baseline.

Her two-handed backhand is an important weapon, particularly when redirecting pace or taking the ball early.

She is especially effective when she can frustrate more powerful opponents by returning difficult balls and forcing them to play additional shots.

Career Rankings

2013 – Year-end No. 862
2014 – Year-end No. 1078
2015 – Year-end No. 505
2016 – Year-end No. 291
2017 – Year-end No. 248
2018 – Year-end No. 258
2019 – Year-end No. 280
2020 – Year-end No. 142
2021 – Year-end No. 127
2022 – Year-end No. 350
2023 – Year-end No. 165
2024 – Career high No. 51; year-end No. 60
2025 – Season high No. 65; year-end No. 70
2026 – Season high No. 71; approximately No. 94 in October

Her ranking history illustrates an unusually successful late breakthrough. After spending many years outside the Top 200, she entered the Top 100 in 2024 and reached her highest ranking at age 27.

2026 Season

Zarazúa has continued competing regularly on the WTA Tour during 2026, appearing in Grand Slam tournaments and other international events.

Her singles ranking reached a season high of No. 71 in May. During the summer she remained largely within the world's Top 100.

By early October her singles ranking was approximately No. 94, with her doubles ranking around No. 200.

Although some online player profiles display an inactive label, her 2026 tournament participation confirms that she remains an active professional player.

Career Statistics

Full name – Renata Zarazúa Ruckstuhl
Born – 30 September 1997, Mexico City, Mexico
Nationality – Mexican
Height – 1.60 m (5 ft 3 in)
Plays – Right-handed, two-handed backhand
Coach – Patricio Zarazúa
Career-high singles ranking – No. 51 (25 November 2024)
Career-high doubles ranking – No. 72 (15 September 2025)
Best year-end singles ranking – No. 60 (2024)
WTA Tour singles titles – 0
WTA Tour singles semifinals – 2: Acapulco 2020, São Paulo 2025
WTA 125 singles titles – 3
WTA 125 doubles titles – 1
ITF singles titles – 6
ITF doubles titles – 17
Best Grand Slam singles result – Second round
Best Grand Slam doubles result – Australian Open quarterfinal (2025)
Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020, held in 2021
First Top-10 victory – Madison Keys, US Open 2025
Career prize money – More than US$2.8 million by October 2026
Current singles ranking – Approximately No. 94 in October 2026
Current status – Active professional

Career Significance

Renata Zarazúa has played an important role in restoring Mexico's presence in elite women's tennis. Her 2020 Acapulco semifinal, 2020 Roland Garros appearance and 2024 entry into the Top 100 ended several long periods without comparable Mexican achievements.

Her rise to No. 51 in November 2024 was especially significant because she had spent most of her early career competing below the WTA Tour's highest levels.

Her victory over Madison Keys at the 2025 US Open provided an internationally recognised milestone and demonstrated that she could defeat one of the world's leading players on a Grand Slam stage.

Career Assessment

Renata Zarazúa's career is a notable example of persistence and gradual development. She spent almost a decade progressing through the ITF circuit before establishing herself inside the WTA Top 100, eventually reaching No. 51 in singles and No. 72 in doubles.

Her achievements are particularly impressive given her relatively small stature and the competitive disadvantages she faces against taller, more powerful opponents.
