“One instant – unrepeatable, yet everything.”

random pic of the day

There are so many photos in my stock that don’t fit in with the esthetic concept of my main approach, yet still worthy of being shown and heeded. This page is the location for that.

—

Prague 2016 – Leaving the tournament one evening I suddenly turned my head and registered this.

Lidziya Marozava giving it her all @ Leverkusen 2017. — Lidziya Marozava | Leverkusen 2017

S'Hertogenbosch 2016 - imagine. change. — S’Hertogenbosch 2016 |-imagine. change.

Bad Saulgau 2016 - From Jasmine Paolini, a no name then and a celebrity now, I have a few lovely off-court pictures, but only one or two fortunately good on-court ones. — Jasmine Paolini | Bad Saulgau 2016

Bredeney 2017 - This colleague showed me his new Lumix camera and I was impressed. — Bredeney 2017

A scene from Eastbourne 2016 featuring Yanina Wickmayer. Again these different realities brought together in one frame. The spectators, the player, the media guy. One can see how bright the sun was on that day, always a challenge for the procedure of serving. — Yanina Wickmayer | Eastbourne 2016

Versmold 2017 - One of my favorite photos of the Morderger twins. — Morderger Twins | Versmold 2017

Stringers @ Linz 2016 — Stringers | Linz 2016

Bredeney 2017 - Photos like this one with the contrast of shadow and light are but possible with the camera set to manual mode. Players: Lidziya Marozava (l.), Carolin Daniels (r.) — Marozava | Daniels| Bredeney 2017

Cologne 2017 - "Money makes the world go round...". Player: Arantxa Parra Santonja — Arantxa Parra Santonja | Cologne 2017

Bredeney 2017 - Following a long and energy-sapping rally the ball goes long. One can still see it flying in the upper right corner of the image. On the face of not too young anymore Lourdes Dominguez Lino, who is still terminating her last running effort, you can see the relief about this point win against a much younger player. She is gasping for breath. In the right foreground blur the applauding hands of an elderly person. — Lourdes Dominguez Lino | Bredeney 2017

"Do you know this song?"- Anna Zaja (l.) and Lena Papadakis (r.) @ Bad Saulgau 2016. — Zaja | Papadakis | Bad Saulgau 2016

"practice, practice, practice". Prague 2016 — Prague 2016

A tennis lesson by Jasmin Woehr @ Bad Saulgau 2016. — Jasmin Woehr | Bad Saulgau 2016

Rain delay @ Versmold 2017. — Rain delay | Versmold 2017.

A snapshot from Eastbourne 2016. — Eastbourne 2016

Stefanie Voegele with a fan @ Luxembourg 2016. — Stefanie Voegele | Luxembourg 2016

Elena Vesnina between the sets in Strasbourg 2016. And a staff member sweeping the lines. Always fascinated by those different personal realities and life plans condensed in one frame. — Elena Vesnina | Strasbourg 2016

Working only with single shots, in doubles matches the player at the net always is more worthwhile to portrait due to the utterly short reaction-time there. Kathinka von Deichmann @ Versmold 2016. — Kathinka von Deichmann | Versmold 2016

Prague 2017 - Being deliberately photographed through a grid, Lucie Hradecka giving it her all on the front court while the next is being prepared for an upcoming metch. In the background one can see trees, in the center the stands of another court, almost in the dark a bridge over river Moldau and a big office building on the other bank. This Štvanice island venue, where the folks of the I. Český lawn-tennis klub (I. ČLTK Praha) hospitably granted me accreditations twice, has been one of my favorite 'workplaces'. — Lucie Hradecka | Prague 2017

Golden hour again, this time in Braunschweig 2017. Lots of pictures in my folders of staff and voluntary activities around the courts. Where or what would tennis be without all those good souls in the background keeping things up and running. This photo I chose for my business card. — Braunschweig 2017

Elyne Boeykens giving it her all @ Bredeney 2016. The handrail obstacle is a deliberate creative choice. — Elyne Boeykens | Bredeney 2016

Aschaffenburg, July 2016 - One of the very few moments, where I was courageous enough to experiment with long shutter speed. Here in this study of Elyne Boeykens it's 1/20 sek with f/16 and ISO 100. What, if more of my photos would have this poetic fragrance. But I never was foolhardy enough to make this a standard procedure. — Elyne Boeykens| Aschaffenburg 2016

Kimberley Zimmermann @ Bredeney 2017. At the end of a long day of shooting, with the tog being tired and perhaps hungry and not so capable any longer to properly concentrate, there is waiting the high time of the day, the harvest time, the golden hour. With photography being all about shadow and light here are the pearls to find, the hoards to yield. And here the quality of shooting manually makes the strongest impact. — Kimberley Zimmermann | Bredeney 2016

Sometimes I forget to mention essential things. In this case it's the fact, that right from the start I denied to use all of the camera's automations except autofocus, which is inevitable in sports photography. The press photographers use strong motors almost as quick as a film camera in order to guarantee and find out the best 'take' of a scene very quickly. For me it's always special to catch close ball contacts. It's much more interesting to work that way since you have to be almost as alert as the players in order to get good and intensive results like here with Andrea Gamiz in Darmstadt 2016. In this photo it also is the light situation between sunlight and shadow, which requires quick decisions as to adapting the parameters like shutter speed and/or aperture to the demands of the situation. — Andea Gamiz | Darmstadt 2016

Understandibly impossible it is to photograph sound. On these small ITF tournaments like here in Darmstadt 2016 with the courts laying side by side the constant polyrhythmic jam session of overlaying hitting impulses was something I being a jazz musician always appreciated very much. Here it's about another overlaying phenomenon, the omnipresent grid structures everywhere. Watch the shadows in the lower left. — Grids | Darmstadt 2016

It's a tricky thing for a photographer to portrait the wind. Here in this moment at one of the practice courts in Nuremberg 2017 it worked out well. — Wind | Nuremberg 2017

Hechingen 2016. The Morderger twins simultaneously playing on different courts, with their mother watching (lower left corner) and the constantly bleating sheep flock grazing on the slope behind that chain-wire fence. One of those lucky moments. — Morderger Twins | Hechingen 2016

Makeshift sun protection @ Versmold 2016.

When rivals meet. Yulia Putintseva (l.) and Daria Kasatkina (r.) @ Eastbourne 2016. — Rivals | Eastbourne 2016

That drench came fast in Versmold 2016. — Heavy Rain | Versmold 2016

This portrait of Tamara Korpatsch and her father @ Hechingen 2017 looks staged, yet it was a true snapshot. To see the potential, to move foward half a step, to focus on the foreground and to snap the shot, a thing of two seconds. — Korpatsch | Hechingen 2017

In Nuremberg 2017 Judy Murray, mother of Andy Murray, held a workshop with a bunch of local kids. — Judy Murray | Nuremberg 2017

One of the many charms of the cozy Eastbourne tournament are the omnipresent seagulls. — Seagulls everywhere | Eastbourne 2016.

Viktorija Golubic consoling Garbine Muguruza after her injury retirement at the quarter final in Linz 2016. — Golubic consoles Muguruza | Linz 2016

Barbara Rittner in the tight grip of a superior power @ Nuremberg 2017. — Barbara Rittner | Nuremberg 2017

After a whole day had been cancelled due to rain in Hechingen 2017 the tennis had to be played in the drizzle during most of the following day. On clay it's doable, risky, but not as risky as on hard court. For this image with Katarzyna Piter I chose a very short shutter speed in order to capture the rain drops. — Katarzyna Piter | Hechingen 2017

The last WTA accreditation I had was Hamburg 2021. Watch Andrea Petkovic doing what she always did best, namely reaching out for the unreachable. — Andrea Petkovic | Hamburg 2021

One of the top memories from my active time is the cozy qualifying weekend in Eastbourne 2016. Back then I was not as focused as I became later and my eyes were looking for everything interesting on and off court. This snapshot of frolicking boys with the deli in the back is dear to me. — Centre Court Deli | Eastbourne 2016

This image of Arantxa Rus came into being in Leipzig 2017. I had been at the WTA events in Strasbourg and Stuttgart that year without accreditation, which forces the tog (photographer) to being a bit creative as to selecting worthwhile yet unusual angles. In Leipzig I had a badge and could move freely, but as you see by then I already had acquired a taste for that creativity. With this result I am especially happy due to its authentic subjective intensity. — Arantxa Rus | Leipzig 2017

Golden hour in Hechingen 2017 | Tamara Korpatsch — Tamara Korpatsch | Hechingen 2017

Simona Halep @ Stuttgart 2017 | 4 sec left. — Simona Halep | Stuttgart 2017

Karolina Wozniacki practicing under the eyes of her father Piotr in Eastbourne 2016. — Karolina Wozniacki | Eastbourne 2016

Camila Giorgi on a windy day in Eastbourne 2016. — Camila Giorgi | Eastbourne 2016
